10:00 am – 11:15 am  Keepers of the Sandlot…Covering the Bases in Youth Sports
Every kid needs a hero and someone to encourage them, especially in these difficult days. Youth sports is our opportunity to help every child that participates. Stories and lessons learned from 15 years of “helping” administrators, leaders, parents, coaches and of youth organizations “relax” and enjoy this critical time with their children will be shared. Time certainly flies. Mom used to say, sometimes the “voice of experience” is a big voice, and we all need positive encouragement.

Presenter: Bill Severns, Executive Director, The Keepers Legacy and Former MLB Player Milwaukee Brewers

During these challenging times children need caring adults in their lives who provide that all-important encouragement and support as they navigate their athletic journeys.

At our upcoming 22nd annual Youth Sports Congress in Baltimore, Md., Bill Severns will share stories and lessons learned from 15 years of helping administrators, leaders, parents, coaches and youth organizations enjoy this critical time with children while making a positive impact on their lives.

During his session – Keepers of the Sandlot…Covering the Bases in Youth Sports – participants will:

  1. Outline the elements of encouragement and how to respond to challenges in these difficult times while focusing on “why” we do what we do.
  2. Review that whether at work, play, coaching, parenting, administrating, etc., every message that adults send is received by youth and our actions are more important than our words.
  3. Define our own natural talents and help others to identify their talents. We are given a short period of time here on this planet, so we need to make the most of every day, never quit, deal with the second guessers, overcome challenges, and stay in the game that is our calling.

Severns is a former professional baseball player who starred collegiately at the University of Oklahoma where he was named an All-American by the Sporting News and was a Second Team Academic All-American. After his 22-year playing career ended, he began coaching his son’s little league teams. His book, “Keepers of the Sandlot,” encourages parents and coaches to enjoy their kids in the developmental years of little league. His second book, “Sandlot Strategy,” is a parents’ manual for coaching kids.

The Youth Sports Congress is a comprehensive educational experience designed specifically for youth sports administrators.
